France opens first electric vehicle battery gigafactory

France has inaugurated its first electric car battery plant in the country's former mining region, marking a significant step in President Emmanuel Macron's "reindustrialization" initiative. The gigafactory, operated by the Automotive Cell Company (ACC) and jointly owned by Total Energies, Stellantis, and Mercedes-Benz, received a €1.3bn state aid package from France, Germany, and Italy. The plant, located near Lens, aims to challenge China's dominance in the electric vehicle battery sector. With production set to begin this summer, the facility is expected to generate 2,000 jobs and manufacture 800,000 batteries annually. This development is part of a larger €7bn plan to establish several new battery plants across Europe. Macron's proactive approach in attracting investments and creating employment opportunities in the green industry contrasts with concerns raised in the UK regarding the nation's position in the electric vehicle battery race.

It is very important, both to reduce France's dependence on other countries for the production of batteries, but also for the planet as French energy is greener than of other countries
