Hi- I am traveling occasionally on behalf of a state government and recently I decided I should use trains/ buses rather than airplanes but state and government travel contracts don't encourage and in fact discourage people from using these great solutions sometime. This is stupid, for example I will be on a train ~44 hours with WIFI traveling from WI to Seattle and will be VERY productive since I will have no family distractions or ability to get away from my email and since I chose the cheapest sleeper car this costs ~$1,100 but the airplane fare guestimated by the travel contractor was only $550 so I will $ out of pocket to work harder and save carbon footprint.
How can we make low carbon transport easier for government employees?? it must be doable. It would be a win for Amtrak and the environment and it doesn't have to be "mandated" just an option. Private bus companies would also win and they must have lobbyists??

Very good arguments to take trains or buses, I have to agree they are way more time efficient if you need to work on the way. But why would we need to make it easier for government employees? Aren't they normal people? Or do you mean that the government should privatise buses or trains for its employees? I wonder what you meant :)
