Coca-Cola wins gold at the 2024 Olympics... for plastic pollution

The Paris 2024 Olympics pledged to be the "greenest ever" in its history and to be "zero single-use plastic" (a pledge that was quickly scaled down to halving the use of single-use plastic compared to the 2012 London Games). A great commitment that unfortunately will not be fulfilled, especially since they took on Coca-Cola as their main sponsor and exclusive drinks distributor.
Coca-Cola – which I would like to remind you is the biggest plastic polluter in the world – produced over 3 million tonnes of plastic in 2022 alone. This is equivalent to 200,000 bottles a minute!
But well, we could say that maybe for these Olympics, they've changed... So let's dig into it. They have planned to distribute beverages in reusable and returnable eco cups and glass bottles and to use soda fountains. I can already hear you say that this is a great initiative, so what am I complaining about?! Well, yes, that's a great idea that could have a significant impact on reducing single-use plastic. But what about before it’s poured into the eco cup? According to the NGO France Nature Environnement (FNE) and news reports, three-quarters of the 9 million drinks planned for sale will come from plastic bottles. Three-quarters of 9 million drinks... this represents 6.75 million drinks coming from plastic bottles! This is pure greenwashing!
And you know what is even more ironic? In many Olympic venues, reusable cups are filled from... SMALL PLASTIC BOTTLES!!! Yes, you read that right 🤡

Considering how much pollution is brought about by plastics,we really have to find a permanent solution to deal with them .

I hope one day this giant plastic polluter will account for all the damage they have caused the environment.

This is so shameful. They should be fined for the damages they imposed on the environment.

It is evident that even the event organizers don't care about the environment!!Shame on them. This partnership undermines the pledge to reduce single-use plastic, revealing a gap between promises and action ⚠⚠

These big sponsors preach water and drink wine It's unfortunate they focus more on profit over planet😞 So green washing isn't a big deal. More shame should go to organisers of these big events as they buy these lies now and then.

@patrick_kiash I agree that the Olympics committee / the organizers of the Olympics should have created stricter rules to prevent this from happening (and they should have chosen a more sustainable alternative instead of Coca-Cola)
