Cut the energy tax and introduce a tax on power!

The shift to sustainable energy and electrical transportation is putting a lot of stress to the energy system. Solar and wind power are difficult to plan but the energy system today is based on production balancing predicted consumption. It is already today possible to get hourly electricity prices from the electricity exchange Nordpool, but few consumers has hourly prices. The incentives are to little due to the fix high tax on electricity. The peak demand for energy is expected to continue to grow due to digitalization, electric vehicles and the industry’s electrification. Even today the big cities lack the capacity needed to serve on extreme peaks. We are suggesting a quick shift in tax, where the new tax would follow the spot price of electricity and creating much bigger incentives to plan consumption to off peak hours. The technology to optimize the consumption already exist for heaters and EV charging. Consumers could save thousands of Swedish crowns, electricity network providers would have to invest less in their networks, new industries can be allowed and best of all, we as a society is ready for a full transformation to electric vehicles and more electricity production from sun- and wind power. Agree to this campaign if you think electricity tax should follow the spot price of electricity!

There are many important aspects of this campaign. It needs and deserves more attention! Let's start with Sweden and then move further. Whether just the tax or the whole price of electricity, customers (commercial, industrial AND residential) should have access to real-time pricing, at least hourly prices. Although price arbitrage using Li-ion batteries first comes to mind, this policy can jumpstart whole industries like EV charging and other forms of energy storage, including thermal energy storage using ground-source heat pumps. Using a real-time price signal will help reduce power peaks organically and will be self regulating as the low or negative prices during low grid consumption will gradually disappear as the uptake of new storage industries grow, as opposed to government incentives, which can suddenly go away and sabotage new initiatives.
