Ditch the Plastic Fruit Sticker!

Dear Woolworths, Fruit stickers are used to identify fruits of all kinds. Usually they are made from plastic and do not naturally break down into the earth. These small stickers create a huge problem! When you are cutting up a whole lot of fruit it is quite easy to miss a sticker here and there. As we are all beginning to compost more and divert our organic waste from landfills unfortunately these stickers do not biodegrade and therefore are polluting our soils or commercial compost. It occurred to me when I was digging in the garden and found a number of fruit stickers which my Grandad would have accidentally put through the compost 10+ years ago. These stickers I found in the soil appeared as though they had been recently removed from the fruit, when in actual fact they had been in the earth for over a decade without showing any evidence of decomposition. This is not only a problem for home compost but also for larger commercial composting facilities. What I would like to suggest, is that if we can’t eradicate these fruit stickers... then we should at least make them compostable, then it wouldn’t be an issue if they ended up in our soil as they would break down naturally! Two viable alternative solutions to plastic fruit stickers include: -Compostable paper or bioplastic sticker https://www.purelabels.com -Tattooed/Laser printed fruit https://www.laserfood.es The UK has pledged to ditch the fruit sticker: https://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/2019/12/17/end-apple-sticker-major-supermarkets-say-will-ditch-labels-part/ Let us not only make the pledge, but implement the solution ASAP and keep our soils free of plastics! Will you address this environmental issue with us? Because together we are the solution. 🙌

Thank you for sharing this initiative with us. We're working hard to reduce plastic in our stores and have removed thousands of tonnes of plastic from packaging in recent years, including 800 tonnes of plastic which has been removed across our fruit and vegetable range. We continue to look at new opportunities to reduce plastic and have passed your member's idea on to our fruit and vegetable team.

I hate finding these stickers in my compost. they are.also adhered with glues that contain estrogen blockers that cause sexual health problems.for humans.and.other animals, especially amphibians.
