Lidl and WWF Launch Strategic Alliance for Conservation and Sustainability

Lidl has unveiled a five-year strategic partnership with WWF designed to enhance conservation and biodiversity across 31 countries, aligning with its objective to halve the environmental footprint of its food products. This initiative will see Lidl and WWF collaborate across the retailer’s value chain, focusing on biodiversity promotion, responsible water management, and sustainable sourcing of materials like palm oil, soy, cocoa, tea, coffee, wood, and paper.
The partnership also aims to enhance supply chain traceability, eradicate deforestation, protect overfished areas, and motivate suppliers to establish science-based targets.
Christoph Pohl, chief purchasing officer at Lidl International, remarked: “As a major food retailer, we are acutely aware of our responsibility and influence. Our aim is to operate within planetary boundaries, viewing sustainable management as fundamental to our business model’s future viability.
“With the expertise and support of WWF, we’re advancing our commitment to sustainability. Tackling global challenges such as climate change and biodiversity loss requires collaborative efforts, which is why we believe in strong partnerships to deliver more sustainable choices.”
In 2023, Lidl joined WWF's initiative to reduce the environmental impact of the average UK shopping basket by 50% by 2030.
This initiative, launched by Tesco and WWF in 2018, seeks to establish an industry benchmark for the environmental impact of the average UK shopping basket, considering emissions, deforestation, food waste, and packaging waste. By COP26, four other supermarkets had joined this commitment, underscoring the importance of supply chains in fostering sustainable food systems and diets.
