Bird flu in Antarctica: a threat to wildlife and the ecosystem

13/11/2024 – This virus, which mainly affects birds, has already reached species that had not previously been affected, and this is very worrying for scientists. The virus appeared in Antarctica in early 2024, and has been spreading rapidly since then. It was initially found in penguins, but is now affecting other animals such as seals and other birds. Among the infected animals are Adelie penguins, Antarctic pigeons and sea lions, showing that the virus has already crossed species barriers, which is even more alarming.
