A Pacific milestone in Indigenous conservation as whales and dolphins are granted legal personhood 🐋🌊

The Pacific Islands have granted legal personhood to whales and dolphins through the He Whakaputanga Moana treaty. Led by Indigenous leaders, including the Maori King Tūheitia Paki, this landmark agreement carries a holistic approach to safeguarding these animals, crucial for both cultural and ecological reasons. However, it alone cannot fully shield these creatures from harm.

Whales and dolphins face numerous threats, from historical whaling to contemporary challenges like noise pollution and climate change. Assigning them legal personhood could pave the way for enhanced mitigation measures, such as altering shipping routes to reduce collisions.
Moreover, this treaty symbolises a broader movement towards Indigenous self-determination and environmental justice. By recognising the spiritual and cultural significance of cetaceans to Pacific communities, it signals a shift towards Indigenous governance and customary law.
Challenges remain, including varying enforcement across nations and opposition from Western institutions. Nevertheless, the He Whakaputanga Moana treaty represents a crucial stride towards recognizing both Indigenous sovereignty and species rights. Now global support is essential to ensure its effective implementation and to protect these magnificent creatures for generations to come.

The legal repercussions should lead to better efforts by corporations to not dump their waste in the seas and oceans. You can be sued for endangering lives of whales and dolphins.

@annett_michuki From hunting, from pollution and even climate change caused by human activity. Time to consider other animals for this too as we will give them a better chance of survival through climate change.

@princess_nel_268 Especially when you consider how much they are hunted for their skins, fat, meat and even as trophies. It is vital to protect them from harm.
