Costa Rica was taken into account in an analysis by the organization Climate Central published on June 11. This study analyzed data between March and May 2024, and was based on temperature anomalies. These anomalies show how hot or cold the conditions were compared to the average between 1991 and 2020. According to this, in our country the temperatures were 1.1 ° C warmer. Furthermore, it should be taken into account that between 1991 and 2020 the temperature was already 0.9 ° C higher than in the time before the industrial revolution.
This publication also measured the Climate Change Index, a measurement developed by Climate Central that quantifies the influence of climate change on daily temperatures. For example, a level of 3 means that the average temperature increased three times compared to a world without climate change. In Costa Rica, between March and May, there were 31 days with indices of 3 or higher. Additionally, there would be 65,000 Costa Ricans who experienced an index of 5 (the maximum) for 60 days or more.
