Post 869: December 26th, 2021. Super News! Last year in the United States, renewable energy provided more electricity than nuclear and coal - becoming the second-most prevalent source of energy across the country! Energy sources like wind, solar, hydropower, and geothermal collectively made up 21% of the total energy supply, squeaking by coal (19%) and nuclear (20%). The only source left for renewables to bypass? Natural gas (which accounts for a whopping 40% of the American energy market).
.
While adoption of renewables and reliance on natural gas have both been increasing, coal-burning has declined immensely in recent years. Between 2019 and 2020, coal-fired electricity generation dropped by 20%, and has reduced to less than half of what it was in 2007. Reports on how 2021 ended up are yet to be published, but the EIA estimates that coal could see a bit of a comeback as prices drop, but overall, we should see an even bigger increase in power derived from renewable sources.
