Another 20 replacement batteries for electric inland vessels
Second youth for exchange batteries, now for emission-free inland shipping

Zero Emission Services hopes to electrify inland shipping with sea containers full of batteries and charging stations along the main Dutch shipping routes. The first charging station and the first 2 exchangeable batteries are ready for use.

Golden bill for inland shipping?
The inland vessel the Alphenaar came into service in 2019 with a diesel-electric drive. This summer, 2 sea containers with a total of more than 4 megawatt hours of batteries will take over the task of the diesel generator.

In the service of launching customer Heineken, the ship will sail back and forth electrically and emission-free between container terminals in Moerdijk and Alphen aan de Rijn for the next 10 years, where the first charging station of Zero Emission Services (ZES) is located. The concept of ZES is based on sea containers full of batteries, which can be loaded and unloaded just like any other sea container with existing cranes in almost any port.

The swap containers can be charged on the shore, while a ship with previously charged batteries continues to sail. Thanks to the batteries and the electric drive, the Alphenaar no longer emits any CO2, particulate matter and nitrogen oxides on its fixed route (± 120 km). Favorably, the banks and floodplains of waterways are often also nitrogen-sensitive nature reserves.
