Eighteen climate activists arrested for shutdown protest in McCarthy’s office
Scores of young activists with the Sunrise Movement, a youth-led climate organization, protested in the office of the House speaker, Kevin McCarthy, on Thursday morning, demanding he avert a complete government shutdown.
Capitol police arrested 18 of the youth who blocked the office entrance and refused to vacate until McCarthy pledged to support bridge funding to keep the government open, including to the Federal Emergency Management Agency (Fema).

The arrest of eighteen climate activists for their protest in McCarthy's office is a concerning development. Peaceful protests play a crucial role in raising awareness and advocating for action on climate change. It is important to respect the right to peaceful assembly and freedom of expression. The activists' demands for government support to avert a complete shutdown and fund critical agencies like FEMA demonstrate their commitment to addressing climate-related emergencies. The circumstances surrounding their arrest should be carefully examined to ensure that the response from authorities aligns with the principles of democratic participation and the urgency of addressing climate change.
