What happens when you ask BING AI for the meaning of Net Zero?
Hello, this is Bing. I can help you with your question. 😊 Net zero is a term that refers to a state in which the greenhouse gases going into the atmosphere are balanced by removal out of the atmosphere¹². The term net zero is important because – for CO2 at least – this is the state at which global warming stops¹. The Paris Agreement underlines the need for net zero. It requires states to ‘achieve a balance between anthropogenic emissions by sources and removals by sinks of greenhouse gases in the second half of this century’². To achieve net zero, we need to reduce greenhouse gas emissions as much as possible and/or ensure that any remaining emissions are offset by removals. The ‘net’ in net zero is important because it will be very difficult to reduce all emissions to zero on the timescale needed. As well as deep and widespread cuts in emissions, we will likely need to scale up removals². Removals can be done naturally, such as by restoring forests that absorb CO2 out of the air, or by using technology that can capture and store emissions or directly pull CO2 from the atmosphere³. In order for net zero to be effective, it must be permanent. Permanence means that removed greenhouse gas does not return into the atmosphere over time, for example through the destruction of forests or improper carbon storage¹. Net zero is the internationally agreed upon goal for mitigating global warming in the second half of the century. The IPCC concluded the need for net zero CO2 by 2050 to remain consistent with 1.5°C². Different actors, such as countries, cities, businesses and other institutions, are pledging to reach net zero by different dates and using different methods. To ensure that these pledges are credible and aligned with climate science, there are some standards and criteria that need to be followed².
