EU has structured new regulations in a bid to clean the environment where cosmetic and pharmaceutical companies will pay more to clean up microplastic pollution they dispose in urban waste waters. In the drafted rules dubbed as “polluter pays principle” the two companies will have to cover at least 80% of the extra costs needed to get rid of tiny pollutants that are dirtying urban wastewater. Virginijus Sinkevičius, the bloc’s environment commissioner, said the steps would safeguard citizens from harmful discharges of pharmaceuticals and cosmetics that end up in water bodies. “This will make our water cleaner and protect our health.” The rules, which have been agreed by the European parliament and council of Europe but not yet formally adopted, bulk up requirements to remove nutrients from water and set new standards for micropollutants. They also broaden the areas covered by the law. The EU's move to force cosmetic and pharmaceutical companies to pay for reducing microplastic pollution is a significant step toward environmental responsibility. The "polluter pays principle" in the drafted rules underscores a commitment to addressing the impact of microplastics on urban wastewater. By requiring companies to cover at least 80% of the extra costs for eliminating these pollutants, the EU aims to safeguard citizens from harmful discharges, promoting cleaner water and better health. The agreement by the European Parliament and Council of Europe, pending formal adoption, signals a strengthened regulatory framework to address micropollutants and nutrient removal, contributing to the broader fight against climate change.
