Citizen TV features a man from Kisumu Making Shoes And Leather Jackets From Fish Skin

It is encouraging how Citizen TV has embarked on environmental journalism by reporting on climate change debate and embracing climate action champions. This is a great way to champion for sustainability now and in the future . In a recent special feature, Citizen TV features an innovator from Kisumu who is making shoes and leather jackets from fish skin(waste). This are good news noting that since time immemorial this fish waste has been dumped by filleting companies around Lake Victoria leading to air pollution from its stench coupled with environmental degredation. Newton Owino, a leather chemist come up with this incredible initiative to help in managing this waste and turning it to meaningful commodities. "The main idea was actually to sustainably manage this waste and also to generate income. We didn't just look at it as waste," Owino says. Owino has established a firm where he collect the waste and turn the fish skin into leather, which he then use to make products such as shoes, jackets, belts and even book covers. Additionally this initiative aside cleaning environment it has created green jobs for youth and women around the area. "I want to urge the youth to look around them and see value in things around them. The leather business is very lucrative, but people think it is only for the less fortunate in society. If we tap into this fully, it is something one can do until they lose their eyesight," Owino says. I am happy to see Citizen TV bring this into light. I only hope Mr Owino's idea will be embraced in Kenya and beyond to aid in managing fish waste in filleting companies.
