PJM Interconnection

Climate warning

PJM supports coal & gas instead of renewable energy, and actually increased coal burning from 2020 to 2021

The 13-state PJM Interconnection is the biggest electric grid in the U.S. and emits 21% of all power sector CO2 emissions, according to a report by McKinsey & Co. Only five countries globally produce and consume more power than PJM, which serves 65 million people and emitted 989 million tons of carbon emissions in 2017. Their emissions have decreased from their levels in 2005 as fracked gas became cheaper than coal. But the amount of renewable energy in their mix remains miniscule, despite 42 GW of interconnection requests by solar and wind generators last year, more than the amount of coal. A 2011 study concluded that the PJM system "would not have any significant reliability issues operating with up to 30 percent of its energy provided by wind and solar generation." Battery technology and availability having advanced considerably since 2011, 30% is almost certainly an underestimate. PJM can ditch coal entirely. Yet PJM not only continues to ignore climate change in their purchasing decisions (letting the public bear the costs of climate change), they actually *increased* their coal usage over the past year rather than decreasing it.
