Less than half of annual tree-planting target in England met, say MPs

The government has met less than half of its annual tree-planting target in England, MPs have found, putting net zero ambitions at risk. The Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra) this year published what it called “ambitious” nature targets, a requirement under the Environment Act, including the goal of planting 30,000 hectares of woodland by March 2025. A report by the environmental audit committee (EAC) of cross-party MPs has found that this target was unlikely to be met. The report revealed that there was no enough direction from the government for the private sector, which faces “unclear strategies and overly bureaucratic schemes”. Furthermore the government failed on its part considering that the public sector is responsible for a quarter of UK woodland. This is now alarming since planting of trees is the only sure way to meeting biodiversity targets which includes and not limited to reducing carbon emissions. Unfortunately not surprising, I follow a guy in Twitter called Phil Sturgeon that's dedicated his life to tree planting and the it's amazing how many barriers and he faces. There are so many ways the gov and local councils can improve to meet the demand

@jordan_edmondson This is sad , the government must stand with volunteers and climate activists ready to plant trees.

Its unthinkable of how the UK government could fail on such an easy yet important task.

This is very impressive, England planting trees to restore its forest ecosystems.

Is it that they don't understand the importance of tree-planting anymore?

If the UK government cannot complete a tree planting activity what can they do

It is essential for the government and relevant authorities to address the reasons behind the shortfall and take necessary steps to accelerate tree-planting efforts.

This is quite a let down, to achieve net zero is not an option but rather a mandatory thing that we should all strive to achieve. Some thing needs to be done
