Two 17-year-olds invent a device that removes microplastics from water!

Victoria Ou, a 17-year-old, in collaboration with her friend Justin Huang, has developed a device that can filter microplastics from water! The teenage duo has won the first prize in the Earth and Environmental Sciences category and received the $50,000 prize from the Gordon E. Moore Award for Positive Outcomes for Future Generations. Microplastics are one of the most pervasive and challenging pollutants on the planet. These irritants can be found everywhere, from the ocean to the air, and even in our food and water! Unknown to us, we ingest and inhale so many microplastics into our body that possibly end up in our blood, lungs, testicles and even breastmilk! The repercussions of this are quite harmful in the long run. And now thanks to Victoria Ou and Justin Huang, who presented their work at the Regeneron International Science and Engineering Fair (ISEF) in Los Angeles, things are starting to feel hopeful. ISEF is an event where top competitors fought for the $9 million prizes. This device uses ultrasonic sound waves to remove microplastics from water. The duo plans to use this device at water treatment plants to reduce microplastic pollution worldwide. Learn more about their amazing invention:
