Turning an invasive pest into green fuel

I love this Startup 4 Climate contestant's idea! It has the potential to take an ecological menace and make a climate win.
Caribbean countries are struggling with massive, recurring blooms of sargassum algae. Sargassum is a naturally occurring seaweed that has historically formed an important part of ocean ecosystems. However, in recent years, the sargassum presence has exploded, driven by agricultural runoff and other pollutants flowing into the sea. Now, huge mats of it float out of its natural range, choking other sea life and smothering beaches. Even worse, when those big, unsightly piles start to rot, they release toxic gases that threaten the health of local communities. This article provides a great rundown of the issue:

Enter AlgaeFuel. This startup's idea is to gather sargassum on a massive scale and use it to make organic fertilizer and biogas, two environmentally smart products out of an ecological scourge. That's why I voted for their project on this year's Startup 4 Climate competition.
