Today September 11th 2024, Nairobi County will launch the ''Breathe Cities initiative'', supported by Clean Air Fund, C40 Cities, and Bloomberg Philanthropies, it will be a groundbreaking move in the fight against air pollution. This $30 million initiative aims to cut air pollution and emissions by 30% across participating cities by 2030. For Nairobi, this means crucial support to address air quality challenges, enhance monitoring, and implement effective cooling strategies. As Nairobi joins a global network of cities working towards cleaner air, this initiative will significantly benefit public health and environmental sustainability.
Kudos to all partners for their commitment to making Nairobi a healthier, more sustainable city that will benefit Kenyans in a bigger way and more deaths that were caused by hazards air pollution can be prevented, as according to the State of the Global Air 2020 report, over 5,000 premature deaths in Kenya are attributed to air pollution, a crisis that has continued to escalate despite Nairobi's position as a global environmental hub.
