Climate warning

Emissions from Australia's coal-fired power plants increase as wind and hydro energy generation declines.

Greenhouse gas emissions from Australia’s coal-fired power plants slightly rose in the first half of the year, reversing a trend of declining pollution in the power sector and raising concerns about the nation’s climate goals. Increased electricity consumption and lower wind and hydro output contributed to a 3.5% uptick in coal generation, despite government forecasts predicting a continued decline. While total national emissions decreased by 0.6% year-on-year, emissions from the electricity sector rose in the March and June quarters.
As the government pushes for ambitious targets, the reliance on coal remains a significant barrier to achieving climate commitments, underscoring the need for more effective policies to accelerate the shift towards sustainable energy sources.
