Tools to assess & address livestock carbon footprint in the U.S.

U.S.-based animal health company Elanco has pledged to help their customers reach net zero emissions through four key areas: Innovation, Analytics, Value Creation, and Reputation Narrative. In a move to progress on the Analytics and Value Creation areas, Elanco has launched a set of tools named UpLook, which is an insight engine designed to predict greenhouse gas emissions and identify key drivers of a food producer's carbon footprint,. This can help cattle feeders better understand their baseline, be empowered to recognize the key drivers of their carbon footprint and determine actionable steps to help move their operation toward improved sustainability and stewardship. Along with this, Elanco are investing in Athian, a start-up the the mission to help the cattle industry capture and claim carbon credits earned through sustainability efforts where possible. The combination of a net zero roadmap and the ability to claim carbon credits has the potential to make sustainability efforts more profitable for cattle producers, both in terms of pure monetary value but also in terms of being able to claim the credit for the carbon reduction themselves. This assessment tool also has the potential to show clearly what methods are better or worse in terms of carbon footprint, making the feedlots and unsustainable farming practices around the world less profitable and attractive. If this initiative goes well, I would like to see how it could be applied to more places around the world.
