Dutch green project developer launches major sustainable hydrogen project in Spain

By: Erika van Zinderen Bakker

Dutch developer of renewable energy projects Power2X has joined forces with Spanish solar energy company Soto Solar to build a large solar park in central Spain. The solar park must generate sustainable electricity for the production of green hydrogen for industry. The partners announced this today during the World Hydrogen Summit 2023 in Rotterdam.

The solar park, which is good for the total electricity consumption of approximately 1 million households (capacity of 1 gigawatt), must generate sufficient sustainable electricity for the production of 55 kilotonnes of green hydrogen per year.

Reducing emissions from heavy industry
The park is largely intended for the production of green hydrogen to reduce CO2 emissions from heavy industry. With the project, which is called ErasmoPower2X, the partners also make an important contribution to the European Commission's ambition to become less dependent on energy imports from outside the EU.

Strategic location
The large supply of solar energy in combination with the presence of many large industries, which can generate a guaranteed sales for green hydrogen, is the main reason for choosing the center of Spain (Castile La Mancha) as the location. From this location it is also possible to connect the project to the future national hydrogen network in Spain. Industrial customers in the region can use the produced hydrogen to drastically reduce their use of fossil fuels, to more than 1 megaton of CO2 reduction per year.
Day and night hydrogen production
The production of green hydrogen takes place in a so-called electrolyser that is powered by electricity generated by the 1 gigawatt of solar panels. In addition, the current electricity grid will be used, so that hydrogen can also be produced at night, when the sun is not shining.

CO2 reduction projects
Amsterdam-based Power2X develops large-scale CO2 reduction projects with new energy carriers, such as clean hydrogen, ammonia and methanol. Soto Solar is a developer and investor of large solar energy projects, which should accelerate the energy transition in Spain. The company was founded in 2018 by Dutch investors Stecc and Hartenlust Solar. Both organizations have extensive experience with sustainable energy projects in Northern Europe.
'Closer to a more sustainable future'
Bas Dekker, CEO of the ErasmoPower2X project: “We are pleased to announce the next phase in the realization of a large-scale solar energy and green hydrogen project in Central Spain. We are convinced that this project will not only benefit Spain, but will also bring us closer to a more sustainable future.”

All permits and investment decisions are expected to be finalized by the end of 2025. Construction can then start, so that hydrogen can be produced from the end of 2027.
