Research suggests that fish near cities are more impacted by microplastics than those in rural areas
10/17/2024 – A study conducted by the University of Otago has found that fish in urbanized areas of New Zealand ingest significantly more plastic than those in regions further away from cities. Published in the New Zealand Journal of Marine and Freshwater Research, the study is the first to investigate how urbanization affects the consumption of plastic by fish species in the country, with a focus on understanding whether location influences the amount of plastic ingested.
