Spain to ban the sale of fruits and vegetables wrapped in plastic from 2023

Fruits and vegetables wrapped in plastic or in plastic containers won't be allowed anymore in Spain from 2023. This measure is part of a Royal Decree on packaging and waste that the Spanish government is finalizing. This ban will apply to fruit and vegetables weighing less than one and a half kilogram and food “at risk of deterioration when sold in bulk” will be excluded from the ban on plastic containers. The Spanish Executive seeks to “combat in the most effective way the overuse of packaging”. Plastic packaging in Spain generates 1.6 million tonnes of plastic waste every year, according to the Ministry of Ecological Transition and less than half of that is ever recycled. The new decree will also include measures encouraging the sale of bulk products and limiting the sale of bottled water. (by installing more drinking fountains!) A good step forward for Spain! And please @regeringskansliet have a look here and be inspired, I had never seen so many fruits and vegetables wrapped in plastics before I came to Sweden (see picture! 🤡 ).
