Bacteria could hold the key to reducing plastic pollution

Research reveals that 1 in 5 bacterial strains have the potential to break down plastic under specific conditions

21/10/2024 – New research by Leiden University PhD candidate Jo-Anne Verschoor reveals that almost 20% of bacterial strains studied have the ability to degrade plastic, but need a stimulus to do so. Published in the journal Communications Biology, the study suggests that some of the smallest organisms on the planet could play a crucial role in solving the problem of plastic pollution.
