China is on track to reach its 2030 renewable energy goal by the end of this year, according to a state-owned researcher

The rapid growth of China's renewable energy sector is very impressive. The report by the China Renewable Energy Engineering Institute (CREEI) forecasts rapid growth in China's solar and wind energy sectors this year. China is expected to add 70 gigawatts (GW) of wind power and 190GW of solar capacity by the end of 2024, surpassing its 2030 renewable energy target of 1,200GW six years ahead of schedule.
In 2023, China added a record 217GW of solar and 76GW of wind power capacity, bringing the total to 1,050GW. The projected new additions would take the installed solar and wind capacity to 1,310GW by the end of 2024. This accelerated expansion is driven by China's push to improve energy self-sufficiency through renewable energy development. However, concerns have been raised about potential overcapacity due to the mismatch between rapidly increasing supply and slower demand growth.

China's rapid renewable energy growth enhances energy security, reduces reliance on fossil fuels, and improves air quality. However, the potential overcapacity issue could lead to economic challenges if demand doesn't keep pace with supply, necessitating strategic planning and policy adjustments. But they can just sell it off, right?

@rashid_kamau indeed, Maintaining momentum and overcoming potential challenges will be crucial for the country to realize its intended objectives. Mostly staying away from coal.

@rashid_kamau If they are serious about going green, I would absolutely back them to achieve it within a short period. They just need to ensure they do not backslide into fossil power
