The European Commission has approved a new IPCEI (Important Project of Common European Interest) called Hy2Move to support research, innovation, and industrial deployment in the hydrogen value chain. The project involves seven member states - Estonia, France, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands, Slovakia, and Spain - who will provide up to €1.4 billion in public funding, with the potential to unlock an additional €3.3 billion in private investments.
The IPCEI will see 11 companies undertake 13 projects focused on key objectives and challenges for hydrogen technology in mobility and transport applications, such as storage solutions, integrating hydrogen into various modes of transport, and developing high-performance fuel cell technologies. The overall IPCEI has a completion date set for 2031, with individual project timelines varying.
This is a significant step in advancing the development and deployment of hydrogen-based technologies in the mobility and transport sectors. Hydrogen has the potential to play a crucial role in decarbonizing these industries, which are major contributors to greenhouse gas emissions. By fostering collaboration between member states and companies, the IPCEI aims to address the technological and financial challenges that can hinder individual efforts, ultimately accelerating the transition towards a more sustainable transportation future.
