Biden administration approves huge oil export terminal off Texas coast

The decision by the Biden administration to approve the construction of a massive oil export terminal off the Texas coast is deeply troubling and contradicts the administration's purported commitment to combatting climate change and advancing environmental justice.

The Sea Port Oil Terminal in Freeport, Texas, represents a significant step in the wrong direction. Not only will it enable the export of vast quantities of crude oil, but it will also exacerbate the already dire consequences of climate change. With the capacity to load two supertankers simultaneously and export up to 2 million barrels of oil per day, this project will significantly contribute to planet-warming greenhouse gas emissions.

The environmental impact of this decision cannot be overstated. The emissions resulting from the operation of the terminal are estimated to be equivalent to nearly 90 coal-fired power plants, further accelerating the pace of climate change and its devastating effects on the planet.

Approving such a project not only undermines President Biden's climate agenda but also risks alienating crucial environmental allies and disillusioning young voters who have been advocating for bold action on climate change. This decision sends a distressing message that short-term economic gains are prioritized over the long-term health of our planet and the well-being of future generations.

Furthermore, this approval stands in stark contrast to the administration's previous actions, such as the approval of the massive Willow oil project in Alaska, further eroding confidence in its commitment to meaningful climate action.

In light of the urgency of the climate crisis, it is imperative that the Biden administration reverses course on this decision and prioritizes investments in clean, renewable energy sources rather than furthering our dependence on fossil fuels. The future of our planet and the well-being of all its inhabitants depend on bold and decisive action to transition away from harmful practices like those facilitated by the Sea Port Oil Terminal.

Sad to see the US government with a double speaking behaviour, promising to protect the environment then all of a sudden purposing to support fossil fuels production.

Building a massive oil terminal to export 2 million barrels per day directly undermines global efforts to reduce fossil fuel reliance and combat climate change. 😡

This is heartbreaking since they are moving one step ahead and 5 steps backward. It's important to continue advocating for sustainable and responsible decisions to address these challenges. President Biden administration should stop the project and rethink of the consequences to the environment and public health.
