UNICEF’s Innovative Approach to Cleaner Urban Lakes in Bangladesh

UNICEF's innovative approach to tackling wastewater and human waste pollution in Bangladesh’s urban lakes is making a remarkable impact on vulnerable communities. In high-density, low-income settlements such as Korail in Dhaka, where access to clean water and sanitation is severely limited, UNICEF’s efforts are a beacon of hope. By addressing the dire need for comprehensive sanitation services, UNICEF is not only safeguarding the environment but also significantly improving the health and wellbeing of children and their families.
A compelling example of UNICEF’s work is its collaboration with the Gates Foundation and local authorities to implement nature-based wastewater treatment systems. These systems, which use natural processes like sedimentation, biological activity, and sunlight, have transformed wastewater management in Dhaka. By treating wastewater from 862 households, these solutions are benefitting over 4,300 people, including children, and ensuring that the water released is clean and environmentally friendly.
The success of these nature-based solutions has positioned them as promising innovations for broader application. With support from the Government of Denmark and the Gates Foundation, UNICEF’s Sustainable WASH Innovation Hub is working to expand these systems across all urban water bodies in Dhaka. This initiative not only addresses immediate sanitation needs but also sets a precedent for sustainable, scalable solutions in water and sanitation sectors globally.
Selina, a resident of Korail, has seen firsthand the positive changes brought by UNICEF’s initiatives. Her family now enjoys a cleaner, safer environment and benefits from reduced water and sanitation costs. UNICEF's commitment to innovation and its global partnerships are crucial for developing and scaling transformative solutions that ensure equitable access to water and sanitation, paving the way for a healthier future for children worldwide.
