Santander arranged billion-dollar oil bond after making green pledge

Oil pipelines are cutting right through the lush greenery of the Amazon rainforest, causing oil spills that poison rivers, kill wildlife, and force Indigenous communities out of their homes.
Who's fueling this disaster? Santander bank, one of the biggest backers of oil projects in the Amazon. Despite recently making a green pledge to protect the climate, it’s bankrolling the destruction of one of our planet's most vital ecosystems - a blatant contradiction to its commitments.
In just two weeks, Santander's top brass will gather for their annual shareholder meeting. The CEO will want to present the bank in the best possible light. It’s our chance to crash the party and speak truth to power: We’ll deliver this petition and talk directly to the shareholders about Santander’s dirty business in the Amazon.

This is outrageous! Santander claims to be green but funds Amazon oil projects. Let's send a message at their shareholder meeting! Sign the petition & #SpeakTruthToPower

This is so ironical!! This juxtaposition highlights the complexities and challenges faced by financial institutions in transitioning towards sustainable practices while still engaging in traditional energy financing. They should go back to the drawing board and reconsider their pledges on transitioning to renewable energy.

It is very worrisome that attempts to backtrack have been so obvious.

It's really disappointing to see institutions backtracking on their climate commitments,

This is a classic case of saying one thing and doing the complete opposite. What is the point of making these climate commitments if you're just going to go around and fund fossil fuels and the destruction of our planet? It's no use lying to the public as we'll eventually find out too. Despicable

@jane_wangui Problem is, we do not have enough legal workaround to heat such institutions without the public and government support. Most times you'll find the governments back such corporations due to kickbacks and corruption involved. We can only stop this by public outrage and action

Santander should invest and lobby for the Spanish nuclear reactors. Current government of Spain is preparing to shutdown all nuclear plants. No refurbishing, just a cold shutdown in a few years. It's insanity.
