Sunday evening, during prime time, danish national TV2 broadcasted the first chapter in “Families like ours” - a drama series about the Climate crisis. The tv-series is made by the renowned Oscar winner film director Thomas Vinterberg. It is the largest production ever for Danish Zentropa. The series is filmed in Denmark, Sweden, France, Rumania and Chekoslovakia.

The drama plays out in a scenario with rapidly increasing sea-rise. The increase has seen the low lying European country Holland going state bankrupt after trying to build taller dykes around the country. However, the movie depicts a fictional development in Denmark, where the government decides it is more financial sound to simply close down the whole country and evacuate its citizens to other higher lying countries in Europe.

The first chapter depicts the decision being taken, but it is leaked by some of the involved before the planned national announcement. The families we follow are upper class, and the drama evolves as we see them frantically trying to sell their own properties before the news about closing down the country are puplicily announced by the governement.

In total the series comprise 6 chapters. Already the first chapter has been very well received with a lot of media attention.

@patrick_kiash It does sound like a solid mix of drama and environmental education, especially with its realistic angle on sea-rise impacts. Knowing the history of Holland’s battle with rising waters, I can see how it could make quite an impression

Art is the mirror to the society and its really encouraging to see producers and actors use their space to support the fight against climate change.

@joseph_githinji hi Joseph - yes, and as we already have the majority of the tech needed to take us to net zero, the remaining big task is on the softer area of people perception. Art and media are probably some of the most signifinificant levers in that space
