Paris generates clean energy from metro passengers 🚇🍃

What if we could change small everyday actions into sources of renewable energy? 🍃👣
On European Wind Day last year, the renewable energy company Iberdrola launched an innovative campaign called "Turn to green" at the Miromesnil Metro station in Paris. Iberdrola converted the metro turnstiles into a green energy source. ⚡🚇
The campaign ran for two days, on June 15 and 16, 2022, during which the turnstiles at Miromesnil station were transformed into functional wind turbines. This project highlighted the key role of renewable energy in the energy transition and also encouraged public engagement and interaction on the subject.

To bring this campaign to life the company partnered with Junia, an engineering school specialising in transitions. The students took on the task of redesigning the turnstile blades into wind turbine blades using 3D printing technology. These specially crafted wind turbine blades are made from polylactic acid, a biodegradable material derived from corn starch, emphasizing the eco-friendly approach of the project.
Human-sized wind turbine turnstiles were placed at the center of the station, specifically between line 9 and 13 connections. Every time a passenger passed through these modified turnstiles, they generated 0,2 watts of energy. Part of the energy generated by the 27,000 passengers powered the two screens surrounding the turnstiles, displaying awareness messages to engage the public further.
Considering the Paris Metro transports approximately 4 million passengers daily and nearly 1.5 billion annually, this project has the potential to generate 136 MW of electricity every year and save 30,000 tonnes of CO2!

The initiative to generate clean energy from metro passengers in Paris is a brilliant example of harnessing human activity for renewable energy production. It not only encourages sustainable transportation but also maximizes the utility of the system. This remarkable innovation underlines the potential of finding creative solutions to address our energy needs and reduce our carbon footprint. It's inspiring to see cities actively seeking ways to generate clean energy and contribute to the fight against climate change.
