EU Parliament calls for negotiation of a Fossil Fuel Treaty in formal COP28 position

The European Parliament has just voted to set its demands for the #COP28 negotiations – including a clear demand for nation-states to join the growing bloc of governments seeking to negotiate a Fossil Fuel Non-Proliferation Treaty. Specifically, the resolution calls for governments to: 🤝 Develop a #FossilFuelTreaty 🛢️ #EndFossilFuels “as soon as possible” ❌ halt all new investments in fossil fuels ☀️ Triple renewable energy The resolution voted on today marks the second year in a row that the European Parliament reiterated its support for the Fossil Fuel Non-Proliferation Treaty proposal in their COP28 position. Unlike the European Council’s pre-COP common position, the European Parliament's text avoids loopholes such as only phasing out ‘unabated’ fossil fuels, and calls for a tangible and equitable exit from all fossil fuels. With international climate negotiations starting at COP28 in Dubai next week, attention and pressure is mounting on whether governments will support a fossil fuel phase-out. World leaders must not only mention the imperative to move away from fossil fuel production in any COP28 outcome text but also agree to set a binding, detailed exit plan through a Fossil Fuel Non-Proliferation Treaty. A bloc of 8 nation states from three continents have joined the growing bloc of countries developing the Fossil Fuel Treaty proposal. Who will be next to join them?

I hope this move will be approved and that the transition will be smooth without resistance from many of the high fossil fuels users. strong substitions will need to be made and third world countries need to follow suit if the overall mother earth is to be preserved and looked after. Everyone counts. Thank you to the EU for the consistent move and push for the hasing out of fossil fuels

the European Parliament's decision to prioritize a Fossil Fuel Non-Proliferation Treaty in its COP28 negotiations demonstrates a forward-thinking approach and a recognition of the need for innovative solutions to address the climate crisis. It now sets the stage for further discussions and collaborations on a global scale to tackle the challenges posed by the continued use and spread of fossil fuels.

This is a significant step towards addressing the urgent need to transition to a low-carbon economy. Such a treaty would help to hold fossil fuel companies accountable for their role in contributing to climate change and promote the adoption of cleaner energy sources. It is crucial that global leaders take bold actions to combat climate change and protect our planet for future generations.
