Climate warning

PJM must stop preventing solar and wind connections to the electric grid!

In its latest attack on renewable energy, PJM proposes a two-year pause on reviewing more than 1,200 energy projects, most of them solar power. New projects may have to wait even longer. PJM has said they prefer big gas and coal plants, and they want to keep it that way. This is an utter catastrophe for the world's attempts to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. PJM is the biggest electric grid in the USA and emits 21% of all power sector CO2 emissions there. All along, PJM has fought renewable energy (allowing only a miniscule % of renewables despite solar and wind being the majority of interconnection requests), and actually increased the fraction of coal burned last year. PJM is moving us in the wrong direction. They must incorporate the risks of climate change in their decision making and communications. They must stop burning coal and give preference to renewable energy in their purchasing decisions by adding the damages caused by climate change (at least $50-100/metric ton of carbon). PJM should also support state decarbonization policies instead of fighting them, and incentivize community solar projects, which would also make the grid more resilient. How enraging is it to see companies actively working against the transition
