🆕 DIGEST July 2, 2024. 🟣 #Hurricane Beryl, now a potentially catastrophic Category 5 storm, has hit Jamaica’s coastline, killing at least one person on Monday and devastating entire islands in the Caribbean. It is now the earliest Category 5 hurricane on record and only the second Atlantic storm of its strength to form in July. China’s longest river, the Yangtze, has burst its banks for the first time in 2024 as some regions report the most severe floods in 25 years. An unusually early and heavy rainy season hit southern China last month, and state media expect flooding to continue through July. Source 🟣 Mexico. This Monday, #Cyclone "Chris" was downgraded to a tropical depression after making landfall over Veracruz, a state in the Gulf of Mexico, at midnight. According to the latest report, the phenomenon was observed 80 kilometers west-southwest of Tecolutla and 100 kilometers west of Nautla, both municipalities in Veracruz. The phenomenon has a maximum wind speed of 55 km/h, wind gusts of 75 km/h, and is moving westward at a speed of 19 km/h. Chris is the second cyclone to hit Mexico in the current Atlantic hurricane season, following Storm Alberto, which resulted in the deaths of six people in Nuevo León, a state on Mexico's northern border, as well as causing destruction and flooding in Monterrey, Mexico's second most populous city. The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued red alerts for all northeastern states on July 2, 2024, forecasting heavy #rainfall as several rivers cross danger levels. 16 people were reported dead over the last two weeks due to rain-induced landslides and 80 people have lost their lives so far all over Northeast. The flooding is primarily caused by the rising water levels of the Brahmaputra River. The Red alert includes district-specific warnings, particularly for regions near the Brahmaputra and its tributaries.
