Two trillion tonnes – to put this value in perspective, which is within the estimate of the size of the asteroid that wiped out the dinosaurs – is the cumulative mass of carbon dioxide produced from the burning of fossil fuels the planet is coping with now. Overall, the amount of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere has risen from 280 ppm in 1850 to 425 ppm today, an increase of 50%.
