British Airways’ Greenwashing as Crushed Rock Won’t Solve the Climate Crisis

British Airways’ plan to offset rising emissions by sprinkling crushed rocks is little more than a PR stunt disguised as climate action. Despite the airline’s claims, this project fails to offset even a fraction of the carbon emissions generated by their flights. While it may sound innovative, the reality is that these so-called ‘nature-based solutions’ are being used to distract from the airline’s lack of meaningful emission reduction efforts. The airline industry is one of the world’s largest polluters, and British Airways’ carbon footprint continues to grow. Instead of making substantial efforts to cut emissions at the source. How? Through cleaner fuels, fleet improvements, or reduced flight frequency. The airline is opting for a quick-fix solution that does nothing to address the scale of the problem. Crushed rocks may have some potential in carbon capture, but the impact is minimal, and far from the game-changer British Airways is marketing it as. This kind of greenwashing is dangerous. It creates the illusion of progress while allowing British Airways to continue business as usual, with little incentive to make the tough decisions needed for real climate action. To prevent catastrophic warming, emissions must be drastically reduced, not offset with ineffective projects. British Airways’ focus should be on reducing emissions at the source, not relying on flashy but ineffective offset schemes to maintain a ‘green’ image. Such half-measures and distraction tactics time is over. British Airways must commit to genuine emissions cuts, or it risks contributing to an ever-worsening climate crisis. This isn’t just about protecting the airline’s reputation, it’s about taking responsibility for its role in the global fight against climate change. Anything less is a disservice to the planet and future generations.

Focusing on offsetting emissions instead of reducing them at the source does not address the root of the problem dependency on fossil fuels for aviation, which is a major driver of global warming.

This is ridiculous!! Such initiatives often serve as distractions, diverting attention from the urgent need for substantial emissions reductions in the aviation sector, which remains a significant contributor to climate change.

I do believe that we need to increase the cost of these flights so as to reduce pollution by reducing the number of trips .

All airlines should work on dealing with the emission brought about by the planes inorder to safeguard our future.
