Zerovia Hydrogen-electric aircraft will begin transporting passengers to Skellefteå Airport in commercial traffic from 2026-27. That is the goal of a new collaboration involving the aircraft developer Zeroavia. A collaboration between four parties will make it possible to fly green to and from Skellefteå in the not too distant future. In addition to Skellefteå Airport, Skellefteå Kraft, the airline Bra and the British-American aircraft developer Zeroavia participate in the project. The aim is to secure the entire chain from the production of green hydrogen to hydrogen-powered passenger planes in commercial traffic. Zeroavia develops hydrogen-electric powertrains where hydrogen is fed to fuel cells, which generate electricity which in turn is used to drive an electric motor. The biggest advantage is that you avoid carbon dioxide emissions In the Skellefteå project, the potential for two of the company's powertrains will be investigated. One is the ZA600, a 600 kW powertrain designed for aircraft with seating for 9-19 passengers. In January, that powertrain made its first test flight with an aircraft, the Dornier 228, in Great Britain. The company aims to launch in 2025. "Hydrogen-powered aircraft as an important solution" The other drive line being considered in Skellefteå is 2-5.4 MW and is called ZA2000. It is still in the development stage and is designed for 40-80-seat planes, such as the ATR, a type of aircraft in Bra's fleet. That powertrain is expected to reach the market in 2027. - We see hydrogen-powered aircraft as an important solution. In order to meet our sustainability goal of reaching net zero emissions on our domestic flights by 2030, we must speed up technology development, says Ulrika Matsgård, CEO of Bra, Braathens Regional Airlines, at a press conference in Bromma on March 29. The collaborative project starts this year with a preliminary study that will investigate the market potential and plan for an upcoming demonstration program. The next step will be for 2024-26 to demonstrate the entire value chain: Production of green hydrogen, which Skellefteå kraft will be responsible for, distribution and handling of hydrogen at the airport and finally flying on test routes to and from Skellefteå airport. The third step will be to start commercial traffic on selected routes, if everything goes according to plan. This is planned to take place in 2026-27.
