World Leaders Commit To End Deforestation by 2030

Big praise to the United Nations and COP26 for facilitating one of the biggest climate deals in Glasgow! It's only been one day and there has already been a monumental agreement made by 100 world leaders to completely end Deforestation by the year 2030. Brazil, the country that is home to the Amazon Rainforest, is one of the signatories that will make the agreement today, but others include Canada, China, Russia and Indonesia. The total number of signing countries account for 85% of the forested regions of the world collectively, so it's a promising step in the right direction as it both reaffirms the agreements made in Paris 2015, and sets clear targets for new countries that have joined. Boris Johnson, British PM, called the deal a "landmark agreement to protect and restore the Earth's forests". A significant sum has been assigned to developing countries that have signed, to help subsidize their restoration efforts, restore areas damaged by wildfires, and support indigenous communities within these forested zones. Additionally, more than 30 of the world's biggest financial companies - such as Aviva, Schroders and Axa - will also commit to ending investment in projects that contribute to deforestation, too. So, this isn't just a deal that holds countries accountable, but international organizations that contribute to the problem, as well. This is great news, especially that Brasil and Russia are on board! Did the previous New York Declaration on Forests succeed in halving the rate of deforestation by 2020? Also it really needs to happen now, not by 2030.

The 2014 NY Declaration on Forests was found by a 2019 assessment to have failed: https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/science-environment-49679883 However, Brazil and Russia (and 60+ more countries than NY) have come on board this time, so we have reason to be more optimistic!

We were also ecstatic after Paris 2015, and then nothing. I will celebrate when I see action and results. Deforestation is the most important problem and should stop yesterday. If ancient forests weren't depleted this much, we wouldn't be in this situation.

Im fully with you, Antonio. This agreement is only optional and 2030 definitely too late. It could even have a negative backlash, meaning that countries like Brasil and Congo would now cut even more everything they can and turn it to money.

@Aterrahe yes, that's the most terrifying scenario, especially knowing how much African and South American politicians are corrupted and how big of a scum the current Brazilian president is, currently under criminal charges against humanity. If he is stopped, then maybe we have a chance. Also cleaning and restoring oceans very important and urgent task.
