A millennium ago, visitors to New Zealand would have seen true "birdtopia"—islands teaming with winged animals flitting through existence ignorant of the presence of mammalian predators.
All of it altered with the advent of Polynesian explorers in the 1200s and Europeans a couple hundred years later.
