Hidden under its fossil image, Shell appears to be the largest investor in making the Netherlands more sustainable. Yes, it is a huge CO2 emitter, but at the same time the company has set up several multi-billion dollar 'green' projects in the Netherlands alone. You would think that the energy transition would be at the expense of existing fossil fuel companies, but Shell is trying to play just as crucial a role in the new energy system as in the 'old' one. So you will soon be able to fly on Shell biokerosene, run your car on Shell wind energy, fire your factory processes with green hydrogen from Shell and Shell can recycle your plastic bottle into a new plastic bottle (now it is mainly 'downcycling').
For EW I visited these projects, but I also spoke to people from outside Shell who have been trying for years with carrots and sticks to make the company go green faster.
