Climate love

New research shows that climate disinformation is thriving and reinventing its discourse

Researchers of the EU DisinfoLab have identified 29 non-scientific websites dedicated to spreading false and misleading information about climate change. These websites specialize in spreading climate disinformation and their main position is to delay environmental protection policies instead of taking immediate action to address the crisis. The researchers show how their disinformative discourse has evolved and how they have updated their strategies to become more subtle and sophisticated. Among these 29 websites, 2 are based in Sweden, and in 8 other EU countries, as well as the UK and the USA.

These climate change denialist websites have adopted a less aggressive tone compared to the early years of the 21st century when explicit denialism was more common and terms like 'scare', 'scam', or 'fraud' were used to attack real climate scientists, but they still go on contradicting the scientific consensus on climate change. The websites have common features such as a name related to the climate sphere, easily identifiable founders, editors, and funders, and a limited number of narratives that are repeated often. These narratives range from denying the existence of climate change to minimizing its impact, supporting fossil fuels and CO2, and opposing renewable energy sources.
I think that this report is a useful tool for people working with climate and communication and wanting to understand the tactics and techniques used by these outlets to spread false information and derail action on the climate crisis.

This is sad. It drags down the efforts to solve the climate crisis.

It is a very interesting study, but also very scary because it gets "harder" to spot climate deniers
