Borrow equipment for outdoor activities and challenge consumption thanks to Fritidsbanken
Ten years ago, Fritidsbanken was born in Värmland, central Sweden. Today, anyone can borrow equipment for sports and outdoor life in one of its 120 locations in the country. This is a pretty cool initiative that I learnt about today and that allows you to borrow everything that you would need for an outdoor activity or sport, from tents and sleeping bags to cross-country skis and tennis rackets.
Fritidsbanken is a national association, where the members – usually municipalities – run the activities themselves. The system is very simple: borrow what you need and return it within 14 days, completely free of charge. The equipment is usually donated by private individuals. This system allows people to think differently about consumption and ownership and helps them reduce their climate impact.
A study from the Swedish research institute Rise shows that a slalom ski from Fritidsbanken has the potential for 70% less climate impact compared to an ordinary, newly purchased ski. The lending model contributes to both reduced material consumption and potentially changed behaviour patterns.



In 2020, Fritidsbanken's loans doubled to 672,000 items. The trend is upward. This is noticeable, among other things, in Botkyrka, south of Stockholm, where fritidsbanken has lent out a record number of items in the past year. - There is a lot of pressure, especially in the winter. Slalom skis, skates, snowboards, long-distance skates and cross-country skis go like clockwork, says Bosse Lundgren at Fritidsbanken in Botkyrka.
