As a way to protect the Brazil Amazon rainforest, Brazil's environmental protection agency IBAMA has fined cattle ranchers and meat packers $64 million for raising or buying cattle on illegally deforested land in the Amazon.
IBAMA said on it had identified 69 properties that had sold 18,000 head of cattle raised on deforested land, and 23 meat packing companies that bought the cattle in the states of Para and Amazonas.
This enforcement plan is aimed at discouraging deforestation in the Amazon by monitoring the chain that produces or sells cattle from illegally deforested areas, IBAMA said.

JBS, one of the biggest meat packers that is under IBAMA scrutiny denied buying cattle from the properties named by IBAMA. "None of the JBS purchases indicated by IBAMA were made from embargoed areas," the company said.

JBS added in a statement that its geospatial monitoring system ensures the company does not acquire animals from farms involved in illegal deforestation, the invasion of indigenous lands or environmental conservation areas.

If JBS claims are true then all the other meat packers must ensure their cattle are not reared in the illegal deforested areas in the Amazon. However if JBS claims are not true, they must detest from it and accept responsibility and more so take the necessary steps by buying their meat from legal grounds only and not from the amazon forest.

Considering that extensive cattle ranching is increasing deforestation in the Amazon rainforest, meat packers must look at the bigger picture and do the right thing for the sake of the environment.
What bothers me the most is that these meat packers signed a commitment with prosecutors in 2013, agreeing not to buy cattle from ranches that have been blacklisted for environmental crimes. Why then are they not keeping their own word?

I applaud Brazil environmental protection agency IBAMA for pointing out this illegal cattle rearing and meat packing in the expense of the beautiful Brazil Amazon rainforest.
