The Infrastructure Law is the largest investment to fight climate change in the country yet. But sadly, in order to get the support of key climate deniers - there are pieces that actually contribute to climate change. . 🌎 The Good: Public transportation, EV charging: Every supporter of the now-law and advocate for the planet knows that the Infrastructure Law puts LOADS of money into big environmental issues here at home. Public transportation is severely broken across much of the United States, and passenger rail is nowhere close to the level found in other countries. Adding billions to these (and more) issues will put the country closer to meeting its environmental goals. . 🌎 The Bad: 'Induced demand': While a (relatively) small chunk of money will go towards road widening, its benefits are only short-term. Adding more space for traffic will allow cars to flow more freely, but a phenomenon known as 'induced demand' actually means the space will fill up with even more cars (leading to even more carbon emissions). . 🌎 The Verdict: The best investment yet, but not perfect: Nothing is perfect, but that doesn't mean everything has to be hypocritical. The irony behind the conflicting pieces of the Law would be funnier if it wasn't a global crisis, but what else can you expect from a law seeking to remedy a (strangely) divisive global issue. We still stand with the progress that comes with the Infrastructure Law, but we are more excited about laws that are yet to come. . . Graphic shows a traffic cone. The factoid reads: "Road widening, while meant to alleviate congestion, actually leads to 'induced demand' and more carbon emissions." .
