Happy #WorldMangroveDay! Here are 5 reasons to protect mangrove forests for the future 🌊🌿💚
️⃣ Mangroves are some of the most carbon-rich ecosystems on the planet, storing on average 1,000 tonnes of carbon per hectare in their biomass and underlying soils.
️⃣ Rich in biodiversity, more than 1,500 plant and animal species depend on mangroves.
️⃣ They nurture animals living in oceans and rivers and their roots filter pollutants from rivers, cleaning water flowing to the sea.
️⃣ Mangrove trunks absorb wave impact, protecting higher ground and providing defence against tsunamis, reducing wave heights between 5 and 35 per cent.
️⃣ Mangroves act as nurseries for numerous fish and marine species, essential for the survival of both local and commercial fisheries.
