A great decision for people's health and the planet! New York City Mayor Eric Adams and New York City Health + Hospitals CEO Dr. Mitchell H. Katz announced that culturally diverse plant-based meals are now the primary dinner options for inpatients. This announcement is a result of a partnership between Better Food Foundation, New York City Health + Hospitals and the Mayor's Office to make vegan meals the default option at all 11 NYC hospitals. While meat options remain available, the two daily chef's dishes are now always vegan. So far, the program has been hugely successful: more than half of the patients have opted for vegan dishes and 95% said they were satisfied with their choice. Initially, vegan meals were only offered for lunch, but they proved so popular that the program will be extended to dinner. This is despite the fact that only 1% of patients identify as vegetarians or vegans. The program is part of the Better Food Foundation's "Greener by Default" initiative, which aims to help healthcare organizations improve health outcomes, reduce carbon emissions and decrease food costs. https://www.nychealthandhospitals.org/pressrelease/mayor-adams-nyc-health-hospitals-announce-successful-rollout-and-expansion-of-plant-based-meals-as-primary-option-for-patients-in-nyc-public-hospitals/
