A women-led initiative training Climate Smart-Agricultural Guides all over Africa

Despite contributing very little to the climate crisis, women in rural Africa are on the frontline of climate change. And as climate change pushes girls out of schools, and destroys school infrastructure, this vicious cycle accelerates the cycle of poverty. This remarkable women-led initiative is making waves to combat this reality and improve food insecurity and resilience across the continent. CAMFED (Campaign for Female Education) a pan-African nonprofit, is training young women as agricultural guides to champion climate-smart agriculture techniques within their communities.
These guides, serving as frontline educators, transmit vital knowledge to farmers, enabling them to adapt to climate change while enhancing crop yields sustainably. The Climate Smart-Agricultural Guides, are supported by CAMFED through their education and possess expertise in sustainable agriculture. Leveraging skills honed during their schooling, including problem-solving and leadership, they integrate this with technical knowledge in the "green economy."
Through a cascade model, the young women leaders reach thousands of people in rural Africa with techniques, information and affordable technologies for climate-smart agriculture, combining Indigenous methods with innovation. They prioritise "forgotten farmers", marginalised smallholder farmers, including those in Parent Support Groups, who grow food to keep vulnerable children in school. And have already reached 100,000 community members!

The impact of this initiative can't be understated. Farmers are adopting multiple climate-smart practices, diversifying crops, conserving water, and enhancing soil quality. And the ripple effects extend beyond agriculture, with communities embracing tree planting initiatives and clean cookstove technologies, furthering environmental stewardship.
Challenges persist, including climate change-induced adversities and cultural barriers. But CAMFED is motivated to continue its mission and forge partnerships to confront these issues!
