They want to cut two tonnes of weight from truck trailers - with steel origami Rendering of truck trailer.

Using curve bending technology, Stilride believes they can reduce the weight of a truck trailer by a quarter.

The startup company Stilride also bends electric motorcycles in steel. The next step could be truck trailers – anything to cut weight and emissions.

The Swedish startup company Stilride, founded in 2020, has caused a stir with its manufacturing technology Stilfold, which can be compared to "steel origami". It means that the sheet metal is bent in a way that produces strong and rigid constructions in relation to the weight. The first product is an electric motorcycle for which the company has so far received 150,000 expressions of interest. The plan is to start converting them into orders in April and start production in the factory in Nacka Strand.

But Stilride also has bigger plans for its manufacturing technology – namely truck trailers.

How did you get the idea?

- Heavy transport accounts for over a quarter of total transport emissions and we saw a great opportunity to reduce weight, material and number of parts with our technology. It enables increased load capacity, fewer transports and, as a result, lower carbon dioxide emissions, writes Jonas Nyvang, CEO and co-founder of Stilride, to Ny Teknik.

- With Stilfold, aerodynamics can be integrated into the structure because no additional components such as side skirts are needed. A chassis is dimensioned by fatigue strength and stiffness. With fewer articles, you get fewer joints, which increases strength. With Stilfold's curve bending, geometry can be used instead of material thickness to increase stiffness. It is also possible to integrate batteries into the folded structure to increase range or load capacity, he continues.

You state that a typical trailer can reduce 2000 kg in weight. How much does it initially weigh?

- Our estimates are based on our Stilfold design which replaces a traditional step frame for a semi-trailer. We estimate a weight reduction of 2,000 kg from a heavy reference trailer of 8,000 kg through increased material efficiency and fewer parts.

According to Stilride's calculations, this gives a five percent increase in load capacity, which results in fewer transports and fewer kilometers driven.

- We estimate that over 360,000 of the total annual transports can be reduced with lighter and stiffer truck and semi-trailer chassis. This enables around 12,000 tonnes in reduced CO2 emissions. And this is just for the construction and mining sectors.

Have you been in contact with any truck or trailer manufacturers?

- We have a development project with Europe's largest trailer manufacturer Brenderup Group and have dialogue with some of the largest truck manufacturers in the world, says Jonas Nyvang.
